In the 'Wye Forest Federation' we use the scheme 'Read Write Inc' By Ruth Miskin.

Read, Write, Inc. Phonics is an inclusive literacy programme for all children learning to read. Children learn the 44 common sounds in the English language and how to blend them to read and spell. The scheme includes both a reading and a writing focus. Reading is the key that unlocks the whole curriculum so the ability to efficiently decode is essential. The R.W.I sessions are taught daily with no exceptions, as the continuity and pace of the programme is key to accelerating the progress of children’s reading development.

Read Write Inc reading books have been purchased to link with your child's phonic ability. Children will bring these home for you to share with them.  Your child will bring home a reading book from our school library and book linked to your child's phonic knowledge that can be read fluently (Read Write Inc story book). This book will contain red words (words you cannot use sound talk for) and words containing the sounds your child has been taught during our daily phonic sessions.
Children in year 1 take part in a phonics screening test. This test is usually in June and will assess children on real and nonsense words. Children need to use their phonic knowledge to decode these words fluently. Use the link to access some previous screening test materials.
If you have any questions regarding phonics please book an appointment to see your child's class teacher.
Use the link below to access the 'Read Write Inc sounds mats'. Feel free to print these off and use with your child at home.
Also below are sample phonics screening tests children undertake at the end of year 1.
