Curriculum Statement

At the Wye Forest Federation, we believe learning should be exciting - our ultimate aim is to provide a highly enjoyable, creative curriculum which not only incorporates the National Curriculum but the needs, thoughts and ideas of the children in our school.

In Early Years, we follow the EYFS curriculum and from Key Stage 1, we follow the national curriculum and teach the ‘core’ subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education (P.E.) and Computing.  Our ‘foundation’ subjects are: Art, Design Technology, Geography, History, Music, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), Religious Education, Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE).  In each curriculum area there is an emphasis placed on skills and, across all curriculum areas, our Federation ‘values’ encourage compassion, resilience, respect & courage in their behaviour and their learning. Values are integral to our curriculum and at the heart of all that we do.  These values will shape the kind of people our children will become and will enable them to make the best of their learning in the future.  Our Federation class rules of Ready, Respect and Safe also feed into our Federation ethos.

Our creative curriculum is fast paced (may be taught through half term or shorter topics) yet allows a greater depth of understanding and ensures that all pupils are motivated, engaged and enthused about every learning experience, inspiring them toquestion, investigate and enquire to become lifelong learners.  We like the children to learn skills as well as content so as they are investigating a Science question through our enquiry based curriculum, they become ‘scientists’, if discovering a new art technique through their topic – they will become ‘artists’.  This then prepares them to be able to question, enquire and investigate throughout their life.

We also promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for others, such as those with different faiths and beliefs.

In addition to the well planned and comprehensive curriculum we also offer the following learning experiences: Forest Schools, outdoor learning, specialist sports coaching, music lessons and gardening.  Children have swimming lessons across the federation at Lindors and Monmouth Boys School.
